3 Common Causes of Inefficient Air Conditioning

When your air conditioning works as it should, how your unit is performing will rarely cross your mind. But when your air conditioner struggles to cool your home or works inefficiently, your AC unit can seriously detract from the comfort of your home.

But why do air conditioners become less efficient? Of course, the biggest reason is old age. However, other, smaller reasons could be causing your AC’s efficiency to drop.

Read on to learn three common causes that can lead to inefficient air conditioning.

1. An Old or Dirty HVAC Filter

Many homeowners think that an air filter doesn’t do much for the HVAC system.

On the contrary, air filters are an essential feature of your air conditioning unit. When a filter is too clogged or dirty, it can’t collect the dirt and debris that lingers in your air.

As a result, this debris flows past the filter and into your air duct system, which can then clog and slow down your air conditioner.

2. Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the liquid that cools the air in your air conditioner. When the refrigerant is too low, it has a more challenging time absorbing heat in the air and cooling it down.

If you haven’t added refrigerant in a few years, ask a technician to check your levels to see if this is the cause of your inefficient HVAC system. If you recently added refrigerant, your unit may have a leak and require professional repairs.

3. Incorrect Thermostat Settings

Though a thermostat seems like a reasonably easy component to work with, many homeowners overlook this aspect and can set it to the wrong settings.

If your thermostat is on the “fan” setting or is set at the wrong temperature, the air conditioner won’t produce cool air.
